Entry Level Mining Jobs

This is a quick guide for the typical jobs in the mining industry in Australia that are entry level mining jobs.

These are jobs where often the person with have no experience before hand and on the job training is often supplied as part of the job.

Some of these jobs come in the form of traineeships or apprenticeships.

So let’s get started:

The most popular first,

Dump Truck Driving Jobs

This is the most popular entry level mining job out of them all. It’s also the hardest job to obtain for unskilled people or people with no experience. To get one of these jobs the only quick way to get a job like this is if you have family member currently operating one. There are some companies that will give you a go if you have “relevant experience” like with a heavy civil construction company.

HR driver Jobs

These unskilled mine jobs are often a combination of driving and labouring requiring physical work too. Need to be physically fit and of course have an HR licence. Recent Driving Trucks in a civil construction environment will be really handy.

MC Driver Jobs

If you have had your HR/ HC you can get training which takes about 1 week and get your MC licence. This enables you to drive the Road Trains in the mines. These jobs can also be a combination of driving loaders as well for example filling up your own truck. To sole driving roles covering large distances each day.

Lab Assistant Roles

Mining companies in the exploration and the harvest stage carry out drilling to test out how much gold for example is in the ground.  The sample rock from the exploration or grade control drilling needs to be tested. These are often tested by third party companies’ offsite and these companies need lab assistants to carry out basic tasks.

Sample Preparer

Like the above job, working with the samples but on the mine site. Working outside typically in the core farm. (Which is where they put all the samples from exploration drilling)? Heavy lifting involved. Forklift ticket sometimes required. HR licence a bonus.

Driller Offsider/ Assistant

Commonly called a driller assistant in Queensland and driller offside in Western Australia. This is heavy labour assisting the driller with drilling. Exploration or Grade control drilling. The job can lead you in becoming a driller yourself if you are successful. HR licence is becoming more and more essential to obtain this role, but it is still possible to obtain such roles without one.

Trade Assistants

These are like labouring jobs working with a variety of trades. Boilermaker and Fitters are the main trades you will be working with. Either, in the workshop or outside on a construction site.

Catering/ Kitchen Hands

Miners need feeding and they often live in large mining camps which are just like a big university campus. They have an onsite dining room and this is where the kitchen hands and caterers work. Preparing food, working with the chefs etc.

Cleaning Roles

The most common type of cleaning jobs in the mines is working for the companies that operate the large mining camps. This is where the miners sleep at night after a hard day’s work. Once a week (or sometimes daily) their room at the mining camp is cleaned, this involves cleaning the ensuite and making the bed with new sheets and vacuuming.

Other cleaning jobs are cleaning the offices on the mine sites. Toilets, workshops etc.

Things like Marcsta, Senior First Aid may also be required in Western Australia for all jobs listed on this page.

I recommend checking current job adverts for such listings and see what they the majority of companies require and then seek to obtain such tickets etc. This way you know that what you are paying for is actually needed.
